Chicago’s Global Engagement: A Hub for International Business and Cultural Exchange

Chicago continues to solidify its position as a global city through strategic initiatives and events that foster international business and cultural exchange.

Attracting International Investment

In April 2026, Chicago hosted SelectCHI, an event that brought together business leaders, investors, and executives from over 30 countries. This gathering aimed to showcase Chicago’s resilience, cost efficiency, and access to talent and markets, positioning the city as a prime destination for foreign direct investment. In 2025, the Chicago metro area attracted $674 million in foreign direct investment across 26 projects, creating more than 2,000 jobs. Additionally, O’Hare International Airport facilitated $423 billion in goods movement, marking a 28% year-over-year increase and establishing it as the nation’s leading U.S. port by trade value.

Celebrating Global Partnerships

Chicago’s commitment to international collaboration was also evident during the 2025 Bank of America Chicago Marathon. Chicago Sister Cities International (CSCI) celebrated its 65th anniversary by highlighting the city’s 28 sister city relationships. Activities along the marathon course and pre-race events showcased cultural exchange and international friendship, reinforcing Chicago’s role as a hub of global engagement.

Engaging in Global Discourse

The Chicago Council on Global Affairs continues to facilitate discussions on critical global issues. Recent events have addressed topics such as the future of Russia’s war in Ukraine and the global influence of the Chicago Cubs and Wrigley Field. These programs provide platforms for residents to engage with international leaders and experts, enhancing Chicago’s global connectivity.

Through these initiatives, Chicago demonstrates its dedication to fostering international business relationships and cultural exchanges, further establishing itself as a leading global city.
